Tempertuin is a young food forest non-profit in the first steps of creation. Part of the terrain is already planted, other parts are barren and will be planted in the years to come. Most of the perennials bushes and trees in the 4000m² greenhouse are already planted and getting established. Unfortunately that means no instagram-worthy pictures for now.
The Dutch word 'tuin' in our name equals 'garden', and the verb 'temperen' comes close to 'toning down' or 'moderating'. Tempertuin aims to be a place for people to step out of the rat race, to find peace and quiet, to get closer to themselves and nature. So if you like music while you're working, don't forget to bring your headset. The name Tempertuin was chosen as a constant reminder to relax and try to let go of the stress of regular life.
Jonathan, the driving force behind Tempertuin, is a night owl, not an early bird, so don't expect any activity before 10am. Daily activities vary on a day to day basis depending on needs and seasons, but can include feeding the animals (2 friendly cats, 14 chickens and 3 runner ducks), gathering eggs, sowing, weeding, harvesting, planting, maintenance of the chicken coop or the greenhouse watering system, preparing the harvest for sale or for storage/freezing to eat it ourselves, creating labels for the plants, and so on...
While this project is relatively new, we do have many years of experience both as volunteers ourselves and with managing volunteers in multiple organizations.
Apart from the main house, there is a building inside the greenhouse that has its own kitchen-living room, newly renovated bathroom and 2 bedrooms. This building is where the non-profit that manages the food forest operates from, and where the volunteers can have a break or eat. WWOOFers get their own private bedroom in this building, ensuring the privacy of both the WWOOFer and the host. You will be sharing your accommodation with 2 rather lazy cats, mother and son, who are a bit careful around new people in the beginning, but they will come looking for your company once they get to know you.
We are flexitarians, so we do eat meat part of the time. Vegans are welcome, but we are not experienced in preparing nutrient-complete vegan meals. So if you're a vegan you'll be teaching us how to prepare filling meals with enough proteins.
